For those who read about Eddie only through here, I want you to know he is ok now; That's the short of it.
The long of it is:
We had such a wonderful weekend with Eddie. It seems like lately every weekend he gets hurt, sick, or something else goes wrong. Is this normal for kids? It just doesn't stop.
I know people are under the impression that Dad and I overprotect Eddie. I think we do protect him a lot because he is our only son and it is our responsibility to watch him and make sure he stays out of trouble.
For example, in my last post, I mentioned dad and I taking turns watching Eddie at the party. I saw other kids Eddie's age (younger and older) there on the dance floor with no parents in sight. They were just hanging out alone. Eddie was the only one that had mom or dad with him at all times. But he was also the only kid willing to run outside to the parking lot or into the back industrial sized kitchen. He loves to do more than other kids around him do, sometimes.
Our "safe place" is at home. This is when dad and I can relax and not have to watch him as much, but lately it seems to be the place he is the most hurt. It has been 4 weekends in a row that he has been hurt (He fell off the bed, while trying to fall asleep, he got cut with a flying toy while playing, he tipped over while sitting in a car in his room and now this.)Dad and I have been looking at each other wondering, should we watch him even closer at home too? Our house is very much child proof and still Eddie finds ways to get hurt.
Last night, we were all in the living room. I was on the laptop, uploading photos, dad was on the recliner taking a cat nap (he had a long weekend of hosting, driving us ladies around-My cousin and her daughter slept over for a party the next day, watching Eddie more than usual so that I could mingle for a bit at the party etc..) Eddie was playing in his room and coming over to our area and playing in front of me.
I see Eddie playing near the fire place, walking up and down touching the bricks when suddenly he stops and knocks over an 8 lb weight onto his big toe, I saw it happen. It happened too fast for me to even scream or jump to save him. All I could do is hug him after the fact, while he cried and screamed for mercy. Gerardo shot up and asked what happened. I couldn't even answer him; I was just holding Eddie.
I immediately thought Eddie had broken his toe. The weights are not usually on top of the fireplace, but I moved them this weekend to make room. They were supposed to be there temporarily, but I completely forgot to put them back in their place.
Gerardo started preparing to take him to the emergency room and without even questioning him, I followed his lead. On the way there, we were all crying.
This sucks. Why is our baby getting hurt so often? What are we doing wrong? We are on him all of the time. We back off to have him learn on his own and still bad things happen to him. He is only a toddler. It's not his fault.
At the hospital, they examined his toe and did X-rays. The doctor came in and told us that it was a very slight fracture on the top bone of his big toe. She said that it really isn't that bad and that we don't really need to do much but to make sure it doesn't get infected. They did a buddy wrap on his big toe to the toe next to that.
Most of all, Eddie was very very scared. He didn't want anyone to touch his foot and that's all the nurse and doctor needed to do. He also thought that I was going to leave him at the X-rays. I had to hold him during becuase he was freaking out so much. He was so scared of even taking ibuprofen, that I felt in my heart he was on the verge of either fainting or having a convulsion. I asked the nurse to stop and just let us give it to him at home when he was more calm.
They sent us home and told us to keep an eye on the blood under the toe to prevent him from getting an infection. On our way out, I had to turn back to the examination room to make sure I didn't forget something when Eddie screamed. He didn't even want to be there anymore. If it seemed I was going back into the building, he freaked out. By the time we got to the car, we realized the Doctor didn't give us the ibuprofen. We looked for a 24 hour pharmacy in the area at nearly 2 am, with none in sight. Meanwhile, Eddie is crying now because he knows we are near grandma and grandpa's and starts asking for them as well as for his great grandma.
Dad and I had to stop there to ask for ibuprofen (we have Tylenol, but the Dr. suggested we use ibuprofen, which we left at Grandma's a while back) When we parked, Eddie stopped crying and was just glad to be there. Grandma held him and great grandma came out to kiss his hurt foot, which by the way he did allow her to.
Last night he slept through the whole night, he did complain a little but mostly I was happy to see that he wasn't sensitive to touch. He tossed and turned as he normally does.
Overall, we are so sad about this, not just because of the pain Eddie has to endure, but because we have been protecting Eddie so much...Below is a video of him a few hours before the incident, singing with us. He had asked to be put in his stroller so that he could strap himself in. After that, the candle in our living room, compelled Eddie to sing Happy Birthday... A few hours before that, all 3 of us were in Eddie's room tickling each other.
